International Day of Radiology is Tuesday November 8th – spotlight on breast imaging advances!

IDOR2016_Poster_A4_180dpi_webTuesday November 8, 2016 is the fifth annual International Day of Radiology (IDoR), and the focus this year is on breast imaging and the essential role that radiology plays in the detection, diagnosis, and management of diseases of the breast.

North State Radiology and Chico Breast Care Center will be celebrating this special day which marks the 121st anniversary of the discovery of the X-ray by German physicist Wilhelm Roentgen.  IDoR will also include celebrations during National Radiologic Technology Week (Nov. 6-12).  IDoR joint sponsors — the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America and the European Society of Radiology — will host international activities to mark the event, together with more than 100 medical societies in 57 countries.

In 2016, approximately 232,000 women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and 40,000 will die of the disease.  This year, we celebrate the thousands of lives saved by the many contributions of breast imagers.

  • Since mammography use became widespread in the 1980s, breast cancer deaths have plummeted by nearly 40 percent.
  • Annual screening mammography starting at age 40 results in the greatest mortality reduction, the most lives saves and the most life years gained.

Radiologists, radiation oncologists, medical physicists, technologists and administrators are working hard to make a positive impact and this is an important recognition of the contributions radiology has made to patient health care delivery and safety. Besides saluting our local health care teams, IDoR 2016 presents an opportunity to remind women to schedule their yearly mammograms because mammography saves lives. While we set aside one day to call attention to women’s health care advances, it is important to note that radiology makes a world of difference every day.
